2025
I played this show and recorded it. Thought some of it turned out ok, hope you enjoy. Don’t mind the occasional glass clinks and or background chatter.
I played sax (alto/bari), shruti box, and sitar guitar with double ebows.
Random happenings from that night, paraphrased:
– “[where i’m from] nobody listens to this kind of music but I love it.”
– [Several folks searching online for what kind of instrument that is. Getting dubious answers.]
– “That was just the kind of music I needed to hear tonight.”
– “I thought I’d maybe heard it all on Wednesday night but I’m here for this.”
Here’s what I wrote for the promo blurb:
“Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Matt McDowell is currently using sustained drones and live electronics to reinterpret traditional folk melodies in a modern Pacific Northwest style. Drawing on experience with DIY rock/noise/free music groups, he brings an open-studio approach to his solo music, creating an immersive bath of sound as he uncovers moments of beauty hidden in the interplay of drone and variation.”
